Best time to visit Naples

What each season is like, and what to keep in mind before you pick your dates.

Spring (April-June)

Mild to warm, with long days and good conditions for walking and day trips. Showers are still possible, especially early in the season.

Summer (July-August)

Hot, sunny and mostly dry, with the warmest days of the year, and heat waves are possible. The sea is at its warmest. Plan sightseeing for the morning and evening, and rest in the middle of the day.

Autumn (September-October)

Still warm in September, then gradually cooler, with the sea still pleasant early on. Rain becomes more frequent as the season goes on, so pack a light rain jacket.

Winter (November-March)

The rainiest part of the year, with November usually among the wettest months. Weather has more impact on day trips and boat trips.

Good to know

Ferragosto (15 August)

A national holiday that marks the peak of the Italian summer break. Around mid-August many businesses in Italy close for holidays. If you travel then, check the opening days of the places you want to visit.

San Gennaro

The patron saint of Naples. The liquefaction of his blood is celebrated at the Cathedral three times a year: the Saturday before the first Sunday of May, 19 September and 16 December.

Day trips and the weather

Boat trips depend on the sea: the Blue Grotto on Capri closes when the sea is rough, and some ferry routes run only in the warm season. Keep your plans flexible and check with the operator.

How to choose

  • For milder weather for walking and day trips: April-June or September-October.
  • For swimming in the sea, for example on a trip to the islands or the coast: July-September.
  • If you don't mind rain: November-March. Bring a waterproof jacket and an umbrella.
  • Travelling in summer? Start early, and keep the hottest hours of the day for a break or for indoor sights such as museums.

These are general seasonal patterns. Weather varies from year to year, so check the forecast before you go.
