Naples to Sorrento: how to get there and what to see

Train or ferry: the two routes, what to see, and what to check before you go.

There are two main ways to get from Naples to Sorrento without a car: the Circumvesuviana train and the ferry.

By train

Circumvesuviana

The Circumvesuviana Naples–Sorrento line leaves from Napoli Garibaldi. It stops at Pompei Scavi on the way, so you can combine Pompeii and Sorrento on the same day.

By sea

Ferry

Ferries and hydrofoils run from Molo Beverello in Naples to Sorrento in roughly 30 to 40 minutes. The service runs all year, with a reduced timetable in winter, and depends on the sea.

What to see in Sorrento

  • Piazza Tasso, the central square, at the end of the main street, Corso Italia.
  • The old lanes around Santa Maria della Pietà, with medieval palaces such as Palazzo Veniero (13th century) and Palazzo Correale (14th century).
  • Sedil Dominova (1500), the only one of the ancient sedili that survives in Campania.
  • The Cathedral, Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Francesco, which has a cloister.
  • Museums: Correale di Terranova, the Georges Vallet archaeological museum and a museum-workshop of wooden marquetry.
  • Villa Comunale, a garden with panoramic views.
  • Marina Piccola and Marina Grande, the beaches and ports, and the natural pool of Bagni della Regina Giovanna.

Before you go

  • Make sure you board the Sorrento train: the Circumvesuviana has several lines. Check the destination shown on the board.
  • The ferry leaves from the port (Molo Beverello), not from the central station, so allow time to get there.
  • Check the last train or ferry back to Naples and keep time for it.
  • Timetables, tickets and operators change: check the Circumvesuviana and the ferry companies before you travel.
