How to get from Naples to the Amalfi Coast

There is no direct public transport: the routes, and what to check before you go.

There is no direct public transport from Naples to the towns of the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and no railway along the coast itself. Every route has at least one change: a train to Sorrento or Salerno, then a bus or, in the warm season, a ferry.

The usual route

Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, then bus

Take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento (about 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, depending on the train). From the Sorrento station, buses run along the coast to Positano (roughly 45 minutes) and Amalfi (roughly 1 hour), longer in heavy traffic.

The alternative

Train to Salerno, then bus or ferry

Trenitalia trains run from Napoli Centrale to Salerno. From there, buses run along the coast towards Amalfi, and in the warm season ferries stop at Amalfi and Positano.

If you'd rather not plan

Organised tour

Organised tours from Naples handle the transport for you. They cost more and follow a fixed schedule, but you don't have to work out the connections yourself.

On the coast

  • There is no train between the coastal towns. You move by bus, by boat between some towns, or by taxi.
  • The coastal road is narrow and very busy in summer, so the ferry is often more comfortable.
  • Ferries between Salerno, Sorrento, Capri, Positano and Amalfi run in the warm season and depend on the sea. Check the operator for the current dates.

Before you go

  • The coast is long. For a day trip, pick one or two towns rather than trying to see them all.
  • Many of the towns are built on steep hillsides, with stairs. Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Check the last bus or boat back to your starting point before you set off, and keep time for it.
  • Timetables, tickets and opening hours change: check the train, bus and ferry operators before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get to the Amalfi Coast by train from Naples?

Not all the way. Trains take you to Sorrento (Circumvesuviana) or Salerno (Trenitalia), and you continue by bus or, in the warm season, by ferry, because there is no railway along the coast.

Is there a direct bus or train from Naples to Positano?

No. There is no direct public transport, and every route needs at least one change.

Do I need a car?

No. Buses and ferries serve the main towns. The coastal road is narrow and very busy in summer, which is one more reason many people prefer the bus or the ferry.

Is it possible as a day trip from Naples?

Yes, but getting there takes a good part of the day, so choose one or two towns and check the last bus or boat back.

How many days do you need in Naples

It mainly depends on whether you also want day trips outside the city.
