How to get from Rome to Naples
Which train to pick, where you arrive, and what to check before you book.
The train is the simplest way to get from Rome to Naples: the two cities are linked by frequent direct services, and you arrive right in the centre of Naples. The fastest option is a high-speed train; slower Intercity and regional trains also run.
High-speed trains
Frecciarossa (Trenitalia) and Italo (a private company) run direct between Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale in a little over an hour. They have reserved seats, so booking ahead is the normal way to travel. Both operators sell tickets on their own websites and apps.
Intercity and regional trains
Intercity and Regionale trains also run on this route. They take noticeably longer than the high-speed trains. Check the times and ticket rules with Trenitalia.
Stations: where you leave and where you arrive
- In Rome, direct trains to Naples leave from Roma Termini, the main station, and from Roma Tiburtina. Check the departure station on your ticket.
- In Naples, you arrive at Napoli Centrale, on Piazza Garibaldi. It is in the city centre, so you do not need a transfer to start exploring.
- Napoli Centrale is connected underground to Garibaldi station on Metro Line 1 and to the Circumvesuviana trains to Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento. That makes it an easy base for the day trips.
Planning your trip
- Because the high-speed trip is so short, Naples works as a day trip from Rome. You will see far more with at least one night: see how many days to spend in Naples.
- If you're travelling on to Pompeii, Herculaneum or the Amalfi Coast, staying in Naples puts you next to the trains for all of them.
- Heading for the airport or a ferry the same day? Allow generous extra time, and keep a train earlier than the one you need as a fallback.
Things to check before you book
- Timetables, ticket types and fares change often and depend on the date: check them with Trenitalia or Italo directly.
- Journey times above are rough guides, not official durations. The exact time depends on the train and the day.
- Strikes and engineering works can change or cancel services: check your train close to the day you travel.
- Keep your bags and phone close in the stations and on the train.
Information here is indicative. Timetables, tickets and fares change, so always check the official sources before you travel.
