How to get from Naples to Capri

Which boat, which pier, how to move around the island and what to know about the Blue Grotto.

Capri can only be reached by sea. Boats leave from the port of Naples and arrive at Marina Grande, the island's main port. The main choice is hydrofoil or ferry, because they leave from different piers.

The fastest

Hydrofoil

Hydrofoils leave from Molo Beverello. This is the quickest way across: roughly 45-60 minutes, depending on the boat.

The slower option

Ferry

Regular ferries leave from Calata Porta di Massa, a different pier from the hydrofoils. The crossing takes longer, roughly 85-90 minutes. Check which pier your ticket is for before you set off.

If you'd rather not plan

Organised tour

Organised tours from Naples handle the transport for you. They cost more and follow a fixed schedule, but you don't have to work out the boats yourself.

Once you arrive

  • Boats from Naples arrive at Marina Grande.
  • From Marina Grande, a funicular goes up to Capri town, and buses run to Capri and to Anacapri.
  • The two main towns are on the hillside above the port and many streets are steep, so wear comfortable shoes.

The Blue Grotto

Visiting the Blue Grotto is never guaranteed.

  • You enter in a small rowboat that carries up to four passengers. You lie back in the boat while the oarsman guides it through the low entrance.
  • The grotto is closed when the sea is rough or the wind is strong. The oarsmen decide on the day, so don't plan the rest of your day around it.
  • Swimming in the grotto is not allowed.
  • You can reach it by boat from Marina Grande, or by bus or on foot from Anacapri.

Before you go

  • Check the time of the last boat back before you set off, and keep time for the return.
  • Rough sea can disrupt sailings.
  • Capri is very popular, and very crowded in summer. Taking one of the first sailings helps.
  • Timetables, tickets and opening hours change: check the boat operators before you travel.
